Everything You Can See And Everything You Cannot See
Earth Itself Is Included!
Everything you can breathe, see, ingest or touch is made up of chemicals. This includes the whole Earth – all matter in it and on it is made of chemicals.
All matter, including us, is made of chemicals. "People seem to believe they should avoid contact with chemicals, which is strange because Everything on Earth consists of chemicals...
There’s a myth [often referred to as the “naturalness fallacy] that nature takes care of humans and provides an environment in which they can thrive... but humans have always created artificial environments... to create a comfortable existence despite nature, not because of it.”
A lot of people seem to believe that they should avoid contact with chemicals. This is actually strange, because Everything on Earth consists of chemicals, many of which, have long names that are difficult to pronounce, like (2R,3R,4S,5S,6R)-2-[(2S,3S,4S,5R)-3,4-dihydroxy-2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)oxolan-2-yl]oxy-6-(hydroxymethyl)oxane-3,4,5-triol (that’s sugar, by the way). Everything contains traces of chemicals that would be harmful if we ingested them in huge amounts.
There’s a myth that nature takes care of humans and provides them with an environment in which they can thrive. This myth is often referred to as the “naturalness fallacy” because humans have always created artificial environments such as farms and houses to create a comfortable existence despite nature, not because of it.
Plant-based skincare products are not truly natural” because the particular blend of ingredients has never occurred in nature. “Natural” is only an appropriate label for single ingredients from animals, plants or minerals that have undergone minimal processing.
It is true that nature gives us some amazing gifts, such as natural foods, antibiotics, and fragrances. However, nature’s gifts need to be located, retrieved, extracted, purified and processed before they’re useful and safe for human consumption. The wild ancestors of the fruits and vegetables we eat are barely edible at best. The ingenuity of our ancestors and generations of toil in the fields bred those wild plants into useful foods. Nature did not provide them as-is.
Naturally-occurring chemicals are definitely not safer than those synthetically created. In fact, five of the seven most toxic chemicals ever discovered occur naturally. Natural botulinum (used in Botox injections) is one million times more toxic than synthetic dioxins and ten million times more toxic than nerve gas.
A product labelled “natural” is not necessarily
or any more effective than its synthetic counterpart.
Remember, naturals, just like people, can be amazing. However, also like people, many naturals can be completely useless, or even dangerous, to us. Choose naturals very, very carefully.
